Getting Ahead By Getting Started

Are you stuck? Are you dreaming of a life different from the one you have now? Does it seem like you’ll never get there? We are often defeated long before we begin, simply because we let the fear of the unknown, or thoughts of inadequacy sabotage our actions.

There are lots of quotes on not letting daunting tasks scare you away.

  • Rome wasn’t built in day
  • Eat the frog
  • How do you eat an elephant? One chunk at a time!
  • You don’t have to be great to get started; but you have to get started to be great.
  • Stop saying I wish; start saying I will
  • The most important step is the first step

The theme is the same. Do something! I know, I know. You’re thinking ‘what do I do?’, because if you knew what to do you’d do it right? That’s not exactly true. That is the story we tell ourselves to justify inaction. Failure’s parents are indecision and procrastination.

What are your goals? What is your purpose? What would you rather be doing? What if you don’t have the answer to any of these questions? Then you start ANYTHING new. The world is too accessible for me to allow you to use the excuse of ‘I don’t know what I want’. I’m not buying it, and neither should you. Read a new book, take a different way home, go to a donut shop/coffee house/supermarket in a neighbor hood not your own. If you continue to do things the way you have, you will continue to get what you have. Different environments will challenge your thinking which can inspire you to look for more new things, which may lead you to something that speaks to you.

Let’s say you have some idea of what you want to do. The momentology practice is all about starting from where you are from what you have, and seeking at every moment to move forward in some way, ANY way that aligns with your dream. Maybe you really want to be a wedding planner, but right now you are a dental assistant. You always secretly (or not so secretly) critique the weddings you attend. You help when asked, but could really see yourself attending to the details you see missing from many weddings. However, you don’t have start up money to quit your day job and go full-fledge entrepreneur.

What if there were some magical box that you could open that would give you all the tools you need to get started? There is. It’s called a computer, and there are computers everywhere. Your phone is now your quickest access to EVERYTHING. Start by making sure you really know your craft. hire yourself to do a mock wedding. Make up a bride and groom with personalities, wish lists and even give yourself typical challenges. He wants small she wants lavish and by the way PINK…all PINK. Create a system for invoicing the client, figure out who your partner vendors would be… tuxedo, flowers, linens, tableware, limo service, etc. You could also start asking people if they want to outsource some aspect of their wedding planning. Maybe you could offer to compile a check list and high-level wedding plan they could use to communicate their wishes to other wedding planners. Similarly you could start a blog that gives wedding planning tips and offer your “wedding planner guide” for a fee from the website.

There are many other things you can do to start getting the word out that you know what you’re talking about and allows you to hone your wedding planning skills. Similar activities apply to anything you want to have, be or do. Just start! Start now, do something, do anything you can to be a part of the dream! You’ll find the journey to the dream will provide you with the tools and resources you need to keep moving forward. You can’t get ahead until you get started. Now. Seriously, right now. Why are you still reading this?!
